SUPERBOY ON TELEVISION

Al igual que el éxito de Superman The Movie en 1978, hizo que se filmaran para la televisión una serie de episodios sobre Superboy, en 1961, tras el éxito de la serie de televisón protagonizada por George Reeves entre 1953 y 1957, hizo que en 1961 se intentara realizar, también para la televisión, 'Las Aventuras de Superboy'. El mismo Whitney Ellsworth, editor de la National Periodical Publications, ahora DC Comics, que intervino en muchos guiones de los episodios protagonizados por George Reeves, intentó seguir el éxito con Superboy, es decir, tal y como ocurría en los comics, con las aventuras de Superman cuando era joven.
Sin embargo, de los 13 episodios que se llegaron a escribir para la televisión, sólo se filmó uno, el primero, y ni siquiera se llegó a extrenar.
No obstante, los aficionados a Superman no lo han perdido pues existe en forma de libro con los guiones escritos de los 13 episodios, el primer episodio completo hasta con los diálogos y muchas fotografías sobre la película e incluso de escenas de estudio. El libro está escrito por Chuck Harter, en el que dedica también parte del mismo a Superpup, una parodia de Superman hecha actores de pequeña estatura disfrazdos de animales, así como una primera parte dedicada a Whitney Ellsworth, con entrevistas a sus familiares. El título del mismo es 'Superboy and Superpup. The Lost Videos'

Ziv-United Artists filmó el episodio piloto, el único que se llegaría a filmar y que se ha conservado para beneplácito de todos los amantes de la Leyenda del Hombre de Acero.
El libro escrito por Chuck Harter, publicado en 1993 es compañero imprescindible del vídeo de 'Video Rarities' titulado 'Superboy and Superpup. The Lost Pilots'.
El vídeo presenta los episodios piloto de Superpup y el de Superboy, pero entre medio de los dos, hay cuatro entrevistas realizadas por Whitney Ellsworth a cuatro chicas para encontrar una actriz que hiciera de la amiga de la juventud de Superboy / Clark Kent, osea, Lana Lang (Lina Luna en las versiones mexicanas de la editorial Novaro).

Las entrevistas son breves y van seguidas de dos secuencias, una con Clark Kent y otra con Superboy. En las dos, Lana sospecha que Clark es Superboy, tema muy típico en las historias de los comics de Superboy. Las cuatro actrices que actúan junto con John Rockwell, el joven actor de 23 años que interpreta a Superboy / Clark Kent, fueron Bunny Henning, Trudy Ellison, Marlo Ryan y Mary Ann Roberts. Trudy Ellison obtuvo una pequeña aparición al principio del episodio y Bunny Henning fue quien consiguió el papel de Lana Lang.
El episodio piloto se tituló 'Rajah's Ransom' y el guión es idéntico a la historia aparecida en SUPERBOY NO.88 de abril 1961 en la tercera aventura del cuaderno, titulada 'The Saddest Boy of Smallville' ('El chico más triste de Smallville'). Lógicamente hay algún detalle más en la película, pero los guiones son casi idénticos. El tema trata de una día en Smallville, en el colegio en donde estudian Clark Kent y Lana Lang, la profesora hace salir a la pizarra uno a uno a cada alumno para que explique a quée se dedica su padre. Cuando le llega el turno a Jimmie (Tommy en el comic), éste es corto en palabras y está triste pues su padre es el portero de un teatro local.

En dicho teatro hay a la entrada la exhibición de las joyas de un Rajá y unos bandidos planean robarlas. Mientras uno de la banda distrae a Superboy, otros dos efectuan el robo, pero el padre de Jimmie les ha visto y como dentro de sus aficcciones particulares está el dibujo, consigue hacer para la policía unos retratos de los dos atracadores y con la ayuda de Superboy pueden ser arrestados. Cuando al día siguiente, la profesora vuelve a sacar a Jimmie para que hable de su padre, éste está orgulloso pues gracias a él se pudieron rescatar las joyas del Rajá y capturar a los bandidos.
In the same way that in 1978, Superman the Movie made that a series of Superboy episodes were filmed for television, in 1961, after the great succeed of George Reeves' Show (1953-1957), made that were filmed for television too, 'The Adventures of Superboy'. Whitney Ellsworth, editor of the National Periodical Publications (now DC Comics), that made several scripts for the George Reeves' episodes, try to keep on the succeed with Superboy, that is to say, in the same way that happenned in the comic books with the Adventures of Superman when he was a boy.
However, of the 13 episodes that were written for television, only one was filmed, the first one, and not even was released on television.
Nevertheless, Superman's fans have not lost it because there is a book with the scripts of the first 13 episodes, plus the complete first episode, including dialogs and a lot of pictures about this film and pictures made during the filming. The book was written by Chuck Harter, with a part dedicated to Superpup, a Superman parody with short people disguised like animals, and a first part dedicated to Whitney Ellsworth, interviewing his family. The title of the book is: 'Superboy and Superpup. The Lost Videos'.
Ziv-United Artists filmed the first episode, the only one that was filmed, that exists for all Superman's fans of the Legend of the Man of Steel.

This video shows the pilot episodes of Superpup and Superboy, but between them, there are four interviews by Whitney Ellsworth to four girls in order to find an actress to made the roll of Lana Lang, the girl friend in Superboy/Clark Kent's youth (named Lina Luna in the Mexican version of Editorial Novaro).
The interviews are short and are followed by two sequences, one with Clark Kent and another with Superboy. In the sequences, Lana suspects Clark kent to be Superboy, a typical plot in the Superboy comics of the age.
The four actresses that act with John Rockwell, the young 23 years old actor that plays Superboy/Clark Kent, were Bunny Henning, Trudy Ellison, Marla Ryan and Mary Ann Roberts. Trudy Ellison got a short appearance at the begining of the pilot episode and Bunny Henning was the girl who got the Lana Lang roll.
The pilot episode was entitled 'Raja's Ransom' and the plot was almost the same as an adventure published in SUPERBOY NO.88 in Aprin 1961 in the third adventure of the issue entitled 'The Saddest Boy of Smallville'. There are some more details in the TV film, but the plot, as we say before, is almost the same: One day in the Smallville's College where Lana Lang and Clark Kent are studying, the teacher asks the pupils to speak about his/her fathers. Jimmie (Tommy in the comic) is very short in his speaking and is very sad because his father is the porter of a local theatre.
In this theatre there is an axhibition of 'Raja's Ransom jewels' and some gangsters are planning to steal them. While one ganster distracts Superboy, the two other ones make the robbery, but Jimmie's father has seen them and as is a very good artist, he draws a picture of the gangsters to the police that with the Superboy's help can arrest them.
The following day, when the teacher ask Jimmie to speak about his father, he is very fond because thanks to him the police could arrest the gansters.
