Those Wonderful British Superman Annuals Text and images by Jim Kealy and published here with his permission The first Superman story I can remember reading was “Superman Retums to Krypton,” way back in 1958. It wasn’t the original US. comic, it was the first story in the Superman Adventure Book 1955-56, and was in glori­ous black and white. This was the introduction, for me, to the wonderful world of the Superman Annual a colour cardboard covered book which gen­erally contained 15 Superman stories. A couple of the earlier books, 1953-54 and 1954-55, had 16 stories and the ‘54-55 Annual also included two Batman stories from 1950. The first of this series was issued just before Christmas 1951 under the title The Superman Bumper Edítion. It contained a whopping 192 pages and included 12 Golden Age stories taken from the pages of World’s Finest, Action and Superman (with illustrations mainly by the illustrious Wayne Boring). It also fea­tured 16 funny cartoons plus 2 tales of Zatara the Magician. It was bound with a cotton spine as were the three which followed it. The first adventure book was published in 1954-55 and had a cardboard spine. This fact is important to collectors because find­ing the remaining books in the series with the spines intact can prove a difficult task Also of note... that first adventure book con­tained four Murphy Anderson-illustrated Captain Comet stories reprinted from vintage Strange Adventures. As the series continued other characters made guest appear­ances, including Jimmy Olsen in 1956-57, 1959-60, 1960-61 (all the stories illustrated by Curt Swan); Green Arrow in 1959-60, 1960-61 and 1961-62 (sorne illustrated by Jack Kirby); Lois Lane by Kurt Schaffenberger in 1959-60; and Vigilante by Dan Barry in 1958-59. The covers were illustrated by British “in-house” artists, apart from those on the Bumper Edition and the 1952 book which were Wayne Boring’s work. Interestingly, the cover on the 1952 Annual was actually an adapted Boring splash page. So there you have it. A lovely set of books quite keenly sought after by collectors for their Golden Age and Silver Age content. Happy 6Oth Birthday Superman. Here’s to the next 60.
