In words of Hyman Gardsbane, "...these Superman comics and others have rarely been seen since they were targeted to schools wich apparently did not purchase them in any significant quantities and they were not offered to the general public. They are accompanied by two posters, one features Batman made by Frank Springer and the other Wonder Woman by Dick Giordano.
There are 8 different comics in them with a total of 6 Superman stories. In addition, there is one story with Clark Kent who in this story does not become Superman but stays as Clark Kent throughout the entire story.
There is quite a story about the origin of these comics. It began in 1970
with the formation of the National Reading Council as part of President
Nixon's Right to Read Program. I was a member of the 50 member Council as
well as Al Capp, the cartoonist of Li'l Abner fame. Capp suggested that good
comic books be developed for the schools to motivate reluctant readers to
read more. The Council did not accept Capp's suggestion, and I have a copy
of an angry telegram Capp sent to the chairman of the Council criticizing the
decision. With Capp's permission, I then contacted Sol Harrison who was
publisher of DC Comics at that time, telling him about Capp's suggestion.
Harrison and I had met and became friends through our mutual interest in
children with severe learning problems. Harrison took the idea to Warner
Educational Services with the result that these books were published in 1977,
distributed by SRA which was a subsidiary of IBM then. Harrison gave me my
copies when they were first introduced in Washington, DC at an International
Conference on Learning Disabilites, March 1977. Originally, there were 10
copies of each comic for a total of 80 books. I gave some away in 1977. The
pictures show all that remain. I have tried but have been unable to discover
any more of them ...".
This is a very rare collection made not only with reprinted issues but mixing and changing images and text.
The images (and most of the text of this site) are from the private collection of Hyman Bardsgane who kindly sent them to me in order to complete the Superman appearances in 1977 and are published with his permission.
