LORI LEMARIS

SUPERMAN AND LORI LEMARIS THE BEAUTIFUL MERMAID

SUPERMAN NO.139

Superman, Lori Lemaris and Lois Lane by Wayne Boring & Stan Kaye

The SUPERMAN NO.139, August 1960 presents as the first adventure, the fourth appearance of the mermaid Lori Lemaris (first on a cover), in a story entitled "The New Life of Super-Merman" written by Jerry Siegel and drawn by Wayne Boring & Stan Kaye. The same artists had made the first appearance of Lori Lemaris, albeit the writer was Bill Finger, in SUPERMAN NO.129 the year before. This issue has another two adventures, the second one entitled quot; The Holly Jailhouse" by Al Plastino and the third one entitled "The Untold Story of Red Kryptonite" by Curt Swan & John Forte. But besides, it has for me other two atractions. Between the first and the second advebnture ther are two pages. In the first one there is Superman mini-story entitled Lend a Friendly Hand" and in the second one another page with the advertising of GIANT SUPERMAN ANNNUAL NO.1 that during a lot of time was for me the only knowledge that I had about that issue, until I was able to buy it.

The New Life of Super-Merman

One morning Lois and Clark goes to a multimillionaire yacht, to write an article about its owner Brett Rand who was at the same school with Lois.

Lois remembers that Brett was a handsome boy in school and thinks if he'd look for a woman. At the same time, Brett speaks to Clark tell him that he is going to ask Lois to marry him. He is the best advertiser of The Planet and the interview has been made in order to propose to Lois.

After dinner Lois asks some questions to Brett and he tells her to go to the deck where he, under a beautiful sea landscape propose Lois to marry him. Clark is after a corner hearing all the conversation.

Lois is very flattered but she tells him that there is only one man to her: Superman. Brett ask her to forget the Man of Steel, but Lois refuses. Clark is still behind a corner hearing it all.

Next morning Brett's fishing net catch a mermaid and Clark sees that is Lori Lemaris, Clark sais that he is seasick and goes to lie down but alone in his cabin he changes to Superman and mentally tells Lori not to be afraid.

Superman gets Lori in his arms and flying to the yatch tells her: 'It's wonderfull to see you again. You're more beautiful than ever. I've never fogotten our romance', and Lois see Superman's face and understands that Superman has a love and that's the reason he never proposed to her.

But Lois hears Superman speaking to Lori about her husband but when Lori departs to the sea, Lois sees Superman's face, sad and with tears in his eyes and she understands that the Man of Steel is still in love with Lori.

Brett tells Lois that forget Superman because he is in love with the mermaid but Lois sais that she'll never give up hope as long as he is not married.

Days later Perry White asks Lois where is Superman because he has not seen him in days. Lois asks Jimmy and he goes home with Lois where he has a televiewer given by Superman that it can tune in on anyone, anywhere and it can even pick up thoughts, and as in Atlantis people speak telepatically, Lois can see and hear Superman in Atlantis. She hears Lori that explains to Superman and her husband that an undersea volcano is about tu erupt and Atlantis will be destroyed. Ronal directs Superman to the volcano and Jimmy explains to Lois the story of Superman and Lori's romance.

Jimmy and Lois, through the televiewer, can see how a rock of the volcano hits Ronal. Jimmy tells Lois if Superman is who has killed Ronal to get Lori but Lois answer him: 'How dare you think such a terrible thing about Superman?'. They go on seing the televiewer and see how Ronal, before dying, asks Superman to merry his wife Lori in order to protect her and knowing that he loved her in the past. Superman argues that he had to be a merman to make Lori really happy but Ronal tells Superman that the Atlantis scientist can transform Superman into a merman. The Atlantis law permits that after seven days of the death of the husband, the wife can merry with another, and finally Superman promeses Ronal to merry Lori after the seven days. Hearing that, Lois sais to Jimmy: 'It means the end of everything between Superman and me'.

A week later, Lois goes with a boat searching for Superman but when she finds it she sees Superman transformed into a Super-Merman and see how Superman tells Lori the death of her husband and ask to merry her. Lori accepts and Lois appears whishing happines to both of them. Superman and Lori say Lois: 'Lori and I will ofen think of you in our Fortress of Happiness in Atlantis. You've been a good friend' and Lois understands that she has lost Superman forever.

Lois is at her appartment and sees pictures about Superman with her. She cannot forget Superman and when Brett ask Lois to merry him knowing that Superman is gone forever, Lois sais to Brett that if she can`t have Superman, she doesn't want any man. Later, Lois is tearfully driving his car that skidds on the wet paviment and crush into a truck but suddenly appears Superman saving the life of Lois .

When Lois asks Superman about the fish-tail, Superman answers her that all was a hoax, the fish-tail and Ronal's death.

The televiewer was a fake and what she saw on the screen was a film prepared in advance with Lori and Ronal's cooperation.

LOIS: 'But why did you do it?' SUPERMAN: 'When I learned Brett wanted to merry you, I decided to pretend I was going to wed Lori, so you'd accept him. I don's want you to waste your life waiting for me. I must put my duty to the world above love. I intended to let you know the truth after you were happily married to Brett. But you rejected him, and then I had to rescue you from that truck'

And Lois thinks: 'If Superman went to all that trouble, it proves I mean a lot to him. Maybe he'll merry me yet, some day.
